Virtual reality and augmented reality technologies have been around for some time. There’s a substantial body of literature that’s worth reading to develop an understanding of how immersive media has evolved and the philosophical and media theoretical perspectives that preoccupied the early pioneers and continue to resonate today. Last year I created a document, “Virtual Reality: An idiosyncratic annotated bibliography” that includes my shortlist of foundational readings along with contemporary angles that are relevant to practitioners. Since this list is updated periodically I’m sharing it as a Google doc which you’ll find at https://tinyurl.com/vr–aiab/. If you have any suggestions for additional readings or would like to comment on what’s included (or not included) in the bibliography, please let me know by using the contact form on this site.
