I got the following note titled “Audio Recording Alternatives” from Rule Broadcast Systems this month…
Fostex, HHB, and Sony have stopped all production of DAT Recorders and, as demand continues to decrease, other manufacturers will follow. New products for storing the digital audio on non-tape based devices are being created.
The Fostex PD-6 DVD-RAM Recorder writes audio files on an internal hard drive and onto DVD-Ram cartridges. This 6-channel recorder comes with time code and a full-function 6 channel mixer. The Sound Devices 744T Audio Recorder 4-channel digital recorder with timecode writes and plays audio files with either 16 or 24 bit depth at all professional sample rates, up to 192 kHz. Files are written to industry-standard WAV files, Broadcast Wave Format files (BWF) or MP3 files onto the internal 40GB hard drive or to a user supplied Compact Flash Card.
