News Readers

With the rising number of quality content sources on the web, surfing to multiple web sites is no longer an efficient way to keep in touch with the news and information you’re interested in.

Enter RSS, a technology that allows web sites to syndicate their content so it can be read by a News Reader application, also known as an Aggregator. With RSS feeds coming straight to your News Reader, there’s no need to visit multiple sites to get the content you want. The stuff you care about is delivered right to your News Reader and updated on a regular basis. This makes it easy to keep up with a large number of sites, all on a single reading list.

Whenever you see a little orange icons labeled “XML” or “RSS” or something like this

on a web site, it indicates that a news feed is available for the site.

There are several ways to subscribe to a web site. You can right click and get the URL of the feed and enter the URL into your news reader. Another option it to simply click on it, and depending on the feed itself and your browser configuration, you might see a bunch of text (the news feed itself) or you might be directed to a page with instructions how to subscribe, or your browser may handle the subscription. This is a new technology so this one click subscribe thing is still working itself out.

There are many News Readers out there, the Macintosh Safari browser and Apple Mail (in Leopard) have RSS feed reading support, here are some other options:

News Reader Applications:

  • NetNewsWire (Excellent RSS reader for the Macintosh, recommended for serious readers)
  • FeedDemon (Popular RSS reader for Windows PC)
  • Vienna (Nice RSS reader for Mac)

Online News Readers:

  • My Yahoo! (add the headlines of any feed to your My Yahoo! page)
  • Google Reader (add blog headlines to your Google homepage or read headlines in Google Reader, which offers the best online interface)
  • NewsGator Online (good online reader with a mobile option)

In addition, feeds made with Feedburner are browser-friendly and can be read in any browser.
