Narrative Documentary

Recently at the Roxbury Film Festival I saw a new documentary that was absolutely amazing: Favela Rising by Jeff Zimbalist and Matt Mochary. The film won the Audience Favorite Award and is interesting for several reasons. First, the film tells the amazing story of how two social revolutionaries started a movement in the favelas of Rio de Janeiro with the goal of drawing youths away from a life of crime and towards more positive alternatives, second, the film mixes narrative and documentary techniques in very interesting ways, and third, the film holds the promise to inspire other communities facing similar problems to organize and work on solving their problems from within. I recently interviewed co-director Jeff Zimbalist about the film for NewEnglandFilm.com.
