I have read on various website, that a lot of people find hand holding the EX1 uncomfortable. I have to agree with them. I have been using this shoulder brace www.studio1productions.com/vsb1.htm and man does it make a difference. I recommend any EX1 owner take a look at this shoulder brace. It's great.

Hi, David.

Glad to see your review, and I hope you're doing well.

I was thinking of buying this camera for a documentary project I'm almost done financing, and I appreciate your thoughts.

@Marco Penso If you need this kind of urgent help, I suggest http://DVinfo.net, a wonderful and helpful community for these kinds of questions. It's very risky to take out a new camera on a shoot after only having it two days. It takes time to learn the specifics of a new camera.

To try to answer your questions in brief, you should use Sony's XDCAM EX Clip Browser which is a browsing and file management utility for XDCAM EX SxS media that allows viewing, transfer, searching, and metadata entry of video clips as well as exporting to MXF files for later import into an editing system. Don't just copy in the finder to make sure the copy of the files is done correctly. Use Sony XDCAM Transfer to bring the media into Final Cut Pro. Please read over the documentation and experiment with the workflow before doing a mission critical project with this camera, which involves a new camera and a new workflow.

If QuickTime playback of XDCAM EX footage is not smooth, it may be your computer is not fast enough to play the large MPEG images in real time.

The times I've shot with the camera and brought media into Final Cut Pro from either cards or copies of cards on the hard drive it has all worked flawlessly, but you really need to walk though the steps carefully and calmly before doing any mission critical shooting and editing with the camera.

Dear all,
i need help!
I just bought the Sony XdCam EX1.
I found it easy to use and very nice images.

But i have a big problem/question: i don't have right now an intel core duo mac so i can't use the transfer or put clips in fcp.

What i ask you is: can i storage the footage without using tranfer, just dragging the files into an hdd? Will i have problems when i will import the material in fcp?

Is it normal that what i see clearly and fluidly in camera's lcd is not fluid in Vlc or QuickTime?

Please, reply me, i start shooting in two days...

Thanks, Marco Penso

David, Have you installed the latest versions of both the SxS driver and the XDCAM transfer utility? Under OS X 10.5.4 and FCP 6.0.4 I've managed to install on both an iMac and MacBook Pro without a hitch. You have to install these two pieces of software before you can import SxS XDCAM EX media into Final Cut Pro. If you continue to have problems, the discussion boards at http://DVinfo.net are an excellent source of video production and post-production expertise from a very helpful community.

[...] The Sony PMW-EX1 XDCAM EX camcorder represents an important milestone in the evolution of digital video camera design. This is the first all-in-one camcorder to provide videographers with the productivity of solid-state memory card recording, the quality of three true high-definition 1/2-inch CMOS sensors, all in a compact all-in-one form- factor. In this combination demo and presentation, I discussed the features and benefits of the camera and demonstrated the simplicity of XDCAM EX workflow with Final Cut Studio 2. I wrote about my first impressions in a earlier post. [...]
