If your budget calls for something less expensive than the Sound Devices 302, you might consider the Azden FMX-32 3-Channel Field Mixer or the PSC DV ProMix 3 as alternatives to the Sound Devices 302. but I've not used them myself, my personal experience is limited to the Sound Devices and Shure field mixers. Guy, there are other small field mixers on the market. The microphone went through a Sound Devices 302 mixer, since I prefer to meter and adjust levels with the mixer, plus it has a very good limiter (compared to most cameras). But the mixer is virtually transparent, it neither improves or degrades the sound. The trick is to turn off noise reduction on the camera and when using a mixer, turn off automatic gain control on the camera and let the mixer's limiter deal with unexpected peaks.
