Yesterday I wrote about using SATA drives with a MacBook Pro. Is it worth the trouble going the external SATA route with a MacBook Pro for editing? It’s certainly valuable when doing media ingest in the field (e.g. P2) direct to a mirrored pair of disks. I like it simply because I need to move external SATA disks between the laptop and my desktop editing systems. But there’s also a performance advantage. But how much? It drives me crazy having three address books, one on my desktop editing system, another on my MacBook Pro laptop, and a third on my old iBook laptop used to surf the web while watching the old media box. How can I keep three Macs synchronized? I’ve finally found a good way to do this after a harrowing journey.

There’s been a lot of talk lately about D.I.Y. distribution among filmmakers. The discussion is fueled by the realization that the Internet with social networking and video delivery tools presents new opportunities to connect with an audience. Which reminds me how much things have changed since I started out on my journey as a filmmaker. Back in 1991 I remember talking with underground filmmaker Jon Moritsugu outside of the Eye Gallery in San Francisco after a screening of his underground hit, Hippy Porn. Summertime gazpacho

Summertime is gazpacho time. This cold soup is popular in Spain’s Andalusia during the summer and when Alice and I were there for our honeymoon, I gained an appreciation for it. The soup has its origins in ancient Andalusian cuisine as a mixture of stale bread, garlic, olive oil, salt, and vinegar. It is not always easy to find a flavorful yet subtle gazpacho here in the states, I was once served a bowl at James Gate that tasted like salsa pored right out of an industrial sized container. The best way, by far, to experience good gazpacho is to make it yourself from fresh vine ripened tomatoes in season. Here’s my recipe.
