Final Cut Pro color correcting blues about to change their hue?

October 28, 2006

It’s no secret, Final Cut Pro’s color correction tools pale in comparison to the Avid. But Apple’s recent purchase of Silicon Color technology is certainly to have an impact on future color correcting capabilities in Final Cut Pro. And even if the capabilities are slated for the rumored high-end version, I hope we’ll get some trickle down capabilities. It’s interesting that the FinalTouch color correction demo was one of the more interesting things I saw earlier this year at NAB, and I made the semi-serious joke at the time, sure wish Apple would acquire Silicon Color just like Shake and Logic and integrate the technology into the Pro Apps…

iView Media Pro gobbled up by the Microsoft Monopoly

I wrote a while back how much I liked iView Media Pro for managing my images. I was very sad to learn that Microsoft has acquired iView Media Pro. I don’t like using Microsoft software for many reasons, their objectively documented violation of the Sherman Anti Trust Act among them.

Finally, a Sony camcorder I would ask Santa for

October 10, 2006

The HVR-V1U is a new 3-1/4″ CMOS HDV camcorder from Sony. It sports a pair of XLR inputs and other prosumer features. There’s also a new HVR-DR60 60GB hard disk recording unit designed to be a companion for this camcorder. The camera can record 1080/24P, 1080/60i, and 480/60i. Yes, you read right, real 24P, no more CineFrame crap masquerading as 24P. The fact that Sony chose to finally adopt true 24P after years of resistance is a breath of fresh air and a really progressive move on their part. The HVR-V1U is expected to start shipping in December, just in time for Santa to throw one on his sleigh for you. I’m looking forward to seeing how the image stacks up against the larger 3-1/3″ chip camcorders, the price will be under that of the Z1U, so Canon, Panasonic, and JVC are in for some stiff competition this winter in the 24P camera race.

Havana - The New Art of Making Ruins

October 2, 2006

I saw a documentary at the Rio International Film Festival last week that was not only beautiful and poetic, but also a strong argument for shooting “real” high definition with Zeiss DigiPrimes if I ever saw one.
