On the stage of The Charles Playhouse (where his show is currently being performed) Ian Pai, co-creator of Blue Man Group, showed several clips of Blue Man Group’s appearances over the years on The Tonight Show. Following the clips Ian discussed his ideas on creativity and where he gets his inspiration. He believes that the lines between Kitsch and the Avant Garde as spelled out in Clement Greenberg’s seminal paper “Avant Garde and Kitsch” are no longer relevant. It’s no longer true that only the mundane gets commercialized. “The cutting edge is everywhere these days, from commercials on television to video games,” he claims. The challenge, as an artist, is to “look at the obvious in another light, with an innocent eye.” He’s done just that with Blue Man Group.
